3.9 Billion Yen Investment! Ishihara Sangyo to Double Production Capacity of High-Purity Titanium Dioxide for AI Server MLCCs
According to the Nikkei, Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha plans to double its production capacity for electronic materials used in AI servers. The product in question is high-purity titanium dioxide (TiO₂)—used in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs)—and the expansion aims to meet rising demand driven by the proliferation of generative AI. The company will upgrade production equipment, such as calcination furnaces, at its plant in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. Production is scheduled to begin in April 2030, with a total investment of 3.9 billion yen, of which 1.3 billion yen will be covered by government subsidies.

High-purity titanium dioxide possesses unique dielectric constants and semiconducting properties, making it a key material for the production of MLCCs, where it is primarily used to manufacture the ceramic dielectric layer. Electronic-grade high-purity titanium dioxide—characterized by high purity, fine particle size, and excellent physical and chemical properties—exists in the rutile crystalline form. Its dielectric and semiconducting characteristics are vital to the electronics industry, enabling the production of components such as MLCCs, PTC thermistors, microwave devices, and piezoelectric elements.
The temperature characteristics of MLCCs are determined by the type of ceramic used as the dielectric material. The primary ceramic types employed are Class 1 (low dielectric constant) and Class 2 (high dielectric constant). Class 1 ceramics are based on titanium dioxide with additives such as strontium titanate (SrTiO3) and calcium titanate (CaTiO3), forming non-ferroelectric ceramics with moderate dielectric properties. Class 2 ceramics are ferroelectric and typically based on barium titanate (BaTiO3); the performance of this barium titanate depends directly on the properties of the raw titanium dioxide material.
